Who We Are
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
Founded in 1916 by William H. Welch and John D. Rockefeller, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is a world-renowned institution dedicated to the education of a diverse group of research scientists and public health professionals, a process inseparably linked to the discovery of new knowledge and the advancement of human health and the prevention of disease and disability around the world. The Bloomberg School—the largest public health school in the world—has 2,287 students from 86 nations. The school has over 60 centers and institutes and is involved in ongoing research projects in the US and over 120 countries. The school receives 20 percent of all federal research funds awarded to the 46 accredited U.S. schools of public health. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has been consistently rated No. 1 by the U.S. News and World Report since 1994, which was the first year the magazine began ranking schools of public health.
Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solution
Established in 2002, the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solution (HCHDS) is a research center of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The mission of HCHDS is to generate and disseminate knowledge to reduce racial/ethnic and social class disparities in health status and health care through research, training, community partnerships and advocacy. Much of the center's work is done through efforts in research, training and community outreach Previously, HCHDS had an exclusively national focus, with much of its work taking place in the local Baltimore community. In 2011, HCHDS established the ICHAD project with a $400,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, marking a planned expansion of the HCHDS vision and programs. The HCHDS is designated as a National Comprehensive Center for Excellence in Health Disparities by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities.
W.K. Kellogg Foundation
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation supports children, families, and communities as they strengthen and create conditions that propel vulnerable children to achieve success as individuals and as contributors to the larger community and society. Over the years, the Kellogg Foundation's programming has continued to evolve, striving to remain innovative and responsive to the ever-changing needs of society. As a general guideline, the Foundation allocates 80 percent of its funding each year to the United States, targeting half of its domestic grants to Michigan, Mississippi and New Mexico, priority states where the need is great and where we have the scale and local knowledge to make the greatest impact. The Foundation invests the remaining 20 percent to promote leadership development and scholarship in Latin America, Mexico, the Caribbean, northeastern Brazil and southern Africa.
